Beginner species

Fascinating, active, and perfect for beginners, Messor barbarus, the European Harvester Ant, is a highly sought-after species famous for its seed-collecting behaviour. They are remarkably polymorphic, boasting a massive size difference between the tiny minor workers and the impressive, large-headed majors. Many queens and major workers feature a beautiful, deep reddish colouration on their heads that contrasts strikingly against their dark, glossy bodies. Watching these ants eagerly forage for seeds, husk them, and chew them into ‘ant bread’ makes them an incredibly rewarding and entertaining species to keep.

Description

About Messor barbarus

Messor barbarus is a famous granivorous (seed-eating) species native to Southern Europe and Northern Africa. They are beloved in the ant-keeping hobby for their distinct foraging trails and fascinating dietary habits. Instead of relying heavily on sugar water or insects, these resourceful ants harvest seeds, meticulously removing the husks and chewing the kernels into a nutrient-rich paste known as ‘ant bread’.

This species is highly polymorphic. A thriving colony features a diverse mix of tiny minor workers who tend to the brood, media workers who do the bulk of the foraging, and robust major workers. The majors, armed with massive heads and powerful mandibles, serve a dual purpose: defending the colony and acting as living nutcrackers to break open large, tough seeds.

Care Guide

To ensure your Messor barbarus colony thrives, carefully follow these essential care requirements, paying special attention to their unique moisture needs:

Housing (Formicarium)

  • Nest Type: Terra nests work exceptionally well. They can chew through soft materials like cork over time.

  • The ‘Dry Room’ Requirement: Because they store seeds, it is absolute paramount that your nest has a clear moisture gradient. They need a damp area for their brood and a completely dry area to store their seeds. If the seed storage area is too humid, the seeds will germinate or grow mould, which can be fatal to the colony. Advice is to avoid hydrating the nests until you have multiple nests, but ensure you provide water elsewhere.

  • Outworld: Provide a spacious, dry outworld for foraging. Sand or a sand-loam mix is a great substrate.

Temperature & Humidity

  • Nest Temperature: Maintain a warm gradient of 24°C to 28°C within the nest during the active season. A heating cable placed over a section of the nest allows them to move brood to their preferred temperature.

  • Outworld Temperature: Standard room temperature (20°C to 24°C) is ideal for the outworld.

  • Humidity: The damp section of the nest should be around 50% to 70% humidity for the brood, while the seed storage area must remain dry. Always provide a test tube of fresh drinking water in the outworld.

Diet & Feeding

  • Seeds (Main Diet): A mixture of small seeds is their primary food source. Chia, dandelion, grass, and canary seed mixes are excellent choices. Ensure seeds are untreated and pesticide-free.

  • Protein: While seeds provide most of what they need, occasional insect protein (such as a freshly killed mealworm or cricket) is highly beneficial, especially for boosting the queen’s egg production and helping larvae grow.

  • Carbohydrates: Unlike most ants, Messor barbarus generally ignores sugar water or honey, as they get their carbohydrates directly from seeds.

Colony Behaviour & Development

  • Growth Rate: The founding stage is notoriously slow, and queens can be easily stressed by light or vibrations. However, once the colony reaches around 100 workers, population growth speeds up dramatically.

  • Hibernation (Diapause): As a European species, Messor barbarus requires a winter hibernation period. Keep them at temperatures between 10°C and 15°C from late November through to late February.

  • Temperament: They are generally clumsy and docile, relying on numbers rather than aggression. They cannot sting, though large majors can give a noticeable nip if provoked. Keep their nesting area free from excessive vibrations, as they are particularly sensitive to them.

  1. Billy-joe Byrne (verified owner) –

I ordered 3 of these queens 2 with workers and 1 with brood… they all arrived with workers so either I got a free upgrade or a couple of workers eclosed in shipping. They’re all happy and healthy 10 days later eating and they’ve been making their famous bread to feed to the new larvae 😊
