The Ultimate UK Beginner’s Guide to Ant Keeping (2026)
Published on Mar 10, 2026
Thinking about starting your first ant colony? At Ant Farm Supplies, we specialize in helping new keepers transition from “founding queen” to a thriving “ant empire.” This guide covers the essential steps for success in the UK hobby.
1. Choosing Your First Species
Not all ants are created equal. For a successful first year, we recommend starting with hardy, native UK species that don’t require complex heating setups:
- Lasius niger (Common Black Garden Ant): The most popular choice. They are incredibly resilient, fast-growing, and active.
- Messor barbarus (Harvester Ant): Famous for their “ant bread” making behavior and varied worker sizes (polymorphism). While they enjoy a little extra warmth, they are highly rewarding to watch.
2. The Founding Stage: Less is More
The most common mistake beginners make is moving a queen into a large nest too soon. A queen ant is biologically programmed to feel safe in tight, dark, damp spaces—similar to a tunnel underground.
- The Setup: Keep your queen in a test tube setup until she has at least 30 workers.
- The Rule of Silence: Leave your queen in a dark, vibration-free spot for 1-2 weeks at a time. Frequent “peeking” stresses the queen and can cause her to eat her eggs.
3. Transitioning to a Nest: The Founding Terra
Once your colony hits the 30-worker milestone, it’s time to offer them their first home. We recommend our Founding Terra or SubTerra nests. Unlike traditional “gel farms” (which are harmful to ants), our nests use a combination of sand and plaster to maintain natural humidity levels.
4. Why Choose Ant Farm Supplies?
Our equipment is designed by keepers, for keepers. We utilize 3D printing technology to create precise, expandable environments.
- Magnetic Connections: Our AFS Outworlds and Terra nests connect magnetically, making it easy to expand your setup as the colony grows without risking escapes.
- Bespoke Designs: Because we print our own gear, we can offer custom variations to suit your specific colony’s needs.
